What are daily living skills?
Daily living skills (also known as independent living skills) are the everyday activities that allow us to look after ourselves while actively participating in our communities and interests. These skills are essential for maintaining autonomy, particularly for individuals with disabilities, older adults, or those recovering from injury.
Some examples of daily living skills include:
- Personal care (showering, dressing, grooming)
- Meal preparation and healthy eating
- Managing household tasks like cleaning or laundry
- Budgeting and shopping
- Using public or private transport
- Communicating effectively and engaging in social settings, such as going fishing or heading out for dinner with friends.
Daily living skills are the foundation of everyday independence. For many, strengthening these skills plays a vital role in achieving their plan goals.

Skill development programs explained
Our independent living skills programs are guided by Occupational Therapists and designed to empower you with practical, real-world skills through structured, hands-on support.
These programs are a key part of how we support independent living, helping you build skills for everyday life and increasing your confidence, safety, and wellbeing, both at home and in the community.
Here’s what’s typically involved:

Assessment
We begin with an in-depth occupational therapy assessment to understand your current abilities, challenges, goals, and environment.

Goal setting
Together, we’ll identify meaningful, realistic goals based on what matters most to you, whether that’s cooking your own meals or catching the bus on your own.

Customised support
We provide life skills training through occupational therapy, tailored to your preferred learning style, abilities, and pace.

Progress monitoring
We continually track your progress, adjust strategies as needed, and celebrate your wins along the way.

Real-life application
Sessions can happen at home, in the community, or wherever you need support most. We might cook a meal in your kitchen or catch the bus together to your uni, for example.
Learning life skills is designed to help you feel more capable and achieve a higher level of independent living.
Who can benefit from kills development program?
Our programs are suitable for a wide range of people who want to increase their independence and confidence in daily life.
You might be:
- An NDIS participant – perhaps you need support using public transport so you can join your friends at social events
- A young adult getting used to living independently – perhaps you need help managing money, remembering your laundry or preparing meals
- A senior keen to maintain independence at home – perhaps you’re recovering from a stroke and need to learn new techniques or use different tools
- A parent or carer seeking structured support for a loved one living with physical or cognitive disability.
