Not every wheelchair is the same. The right one for your needs can make a significant difference to comfort, posture, pressure care and independence.
A standard wheelchair may suit short-term or lower-complexity needs. But if you use a wheelchair for long periods each day, or have more complex physical needs, you may need a clinically prescribed seating system.
Our Occupational Therapists assess more than your mobility. We look at how your seating supports your body over time, including posture, symmetry, skin integrity, fatigue, function and respiratory capacity.
The right setup can help reduce the risk of secondary complications such as pressure injuries, postural asymmetry, and reduced tolerance for sitting.
Our goal is to match the equipment to the person, not the other way around.

We begin with a detailed assessment to understand your daily routine, functional goals, physical presentation and seating needs.

Clinic-based trial
Our clinic trials allow us to assess different wheelchairs, seating components and pressure care options in one place.
While in our clinic, you may try out:
- Manual wheelchairs
- Power wheelchairs
- Tilt-in-space or other complex seating options
- Cushions and backrests
- Headrests, lateral supports and positioning components
- Different drive controls and access methods
This stage helps us identify what provides the right balance of support, comfort, function and usability.
Home-based trial
A wheelchair can perform well in a clinic, but still needs to be tested in normal daily life.
That is why we offer home-based trials.
We bring the selected equipment into your real environment to see how it works in your home, at entry points, in bathrooms, around furniture and within everyday routines.
This helps answer two important questions early:
- Will it work in your home?
- Will it work for your life?

Once the right equipment has been identified, we provide the clinical documentation needed to support funding applications through:
- NDIS Assistive Technology

Pressure care and skin integrity
Pressure care is a key consideration for full-time wheelchair users.
Poor pressure distribution can increase the risk of discomfort, skin breakdown and pressure injuries. For some people, it can also affect sitting tolerance, daily participation and overall health.

Manual or power wheelchair: what is right for you?
The right mobility solution depends on your body, your environment and how you need to function each day. We assess these factors carefully so our final recommendation is practical as well as clinically appropriate.
Manual wheelchairs
Manual wheelchairs may be suitable for people who:
- Can self-propel effectively
- Have support available for pushing when needed
- Need a lighter or more transportable setup
- Use a wheelchair for shorter durations or specific activities
They can offer simplicity and portability, but they are not always the best option for people with limited strength, endurance or postural needs.
Power wheelchairs
Power wheelchairs may be more suitable when independent mobility is limited by strength, pain, fatigue, endurance or complex physical presentation.

- Better positioning through powered seating functions in some models

At the same time, the Occupational Therapist remains the independent clinical lead. Our recommendations are guided by assessment findings, function, postural needs and long-term outcomes — not by a single product or supplier. That independence aids funding justifications and helps ensure your chair genuinely meets your needs.
